There are just some sweet memories that will be treasured forever and our “goodnight John-Boy routine” is one of them. What in the world is a “goodnight John-Boy routine” you ask? I guess I am dating myself with this post, but growing up my family loved watching The Waltons. I’m pretty sure it was all re-runs, but my parents loved it and thus I ended up watching it also. But I really didn’t mind-it was a good show! It has been years now since I’ve watched the show, but one part will forever be etched in my mind-the last few moments of each episode as all the family calls out good night to each other family member. It is a very touching sound to hear the love in their voices as they end each day.
But back to my point-our routine. I’m not really sure how it happened. It wasn’t planned or taught, but each night as our children are put to bed they each begin calling out their love to the others. Even the dog isn’t forgotten as we hear, “Goodnight Rescue, I love you!” No matter how bad the day or what is going on in life, it always brings a smile to my face. Even now as I type, I can hear them in my mind and I’m smiling.
Does this mean that our life is perfect? Far from it! Does it mean that my children never fight? Obviously not! But it does mean that we do truly love each other; and at the end of the day, when all is said and done, our love trumps those less important things. It’s knowing my children feel secure-in our love for them and their love for us and each other. It’s thanking God for these simple blessing in life-for they are some of the most cherished.
