We just got back from a much needed vacation and I thought you might like to know what I take with us to keep us healthy and to head off any sniffles or upset tummies that creep up. There is nothing worse than a vacation turned nightmare because someone got sick. And if you ever have one of those trips (we did-read on to hear about it), you’ll never go on a vacation again without the prayer “Oh Lord, please don’t let anyone get sick!”
That trip happened for us several years ago. We had been taking herbs and had seen an improvement in our health, but had yet to add all the fermented foods and drinks into our meals. My kiddos were still very small and all in car seats when we loaded up the van and headed off to North Carolina to visit family. With about an hour left in the trip, my middle girl gets sick-with no warning. Praise the Lord, most of the throw up was contained to her and her car seat, but still ugh! Well, we got there with no other incidents and actually have a nice trip-other than that looming thought in the back of my head, “WHO’S GOING TO BE SICK NEXT?”
Well, no one else got sick so we thought maybe she ate something that didn’t agree with her. (Wishful thinking) As we began to head home, I was not feeling very well, but since I have struggled with digestive issues and we had eaten out ALOT, I really didn’t think much of it. But a few hours into the trip, I realized, I WAS SICK! It was a Sunday evening so not much was open and we still had a long way to get home. We stopped at a Walmart to try to find some herbs-or anything that would help at this point, but no such luck. It was a horrible, several hour ride home where I got my herbs and was soon better. Although that stomach bug did go through all our kids. 🙁
After that trip I vowed to NEVER leave home without my herbs (and plastic barf bags). We may get sick again, but I would be prepared! And I want you to be prepared too. I don’t wish that trip on anyone. So what do I pack with me when we travel?
There are 2 main herbs I take with me and that is ginger and activated charcoal. I have ginger capsules and ginger slices and the activated charcoal is also encapsulated. Both of these are my go-to herbs for any kind of tummy aches. I also take my EPONY tincture that is great for colds, flu, and general sinus problems. And I can’t forget about my Omni Salve-great for all the bumps, bites, and stings of life!
As for the food, I strive to pack lots of probiotic rich foods to feed our guts as we travel. A must since we usually eat out several times! We always take our kefir in my Kefirko so we can have kefir smoothies each morning. And of course we have to have our kombucha. I usually try to fix a batch right before we go so we have a stockpile for our trips!
