Let’s face it, we all like fresh clean air. But sometimes the air around us needs a little help. Like the time you I burned supper and the whole house smelled rather smoky. Or when everyone around you is sick and coughing their heads off. Or maybe the bathroom…well you get the idea. So we reach for an air freshener but most of the conventional, store bought ones are full of chemicals and toxins and only mask the smell. Instead of those toxic air fresheners, you should reach for your natural air freshener that you made yourself using essential oils. Not only is it much safer for you and your family, it’s also just as effective if not more so. It won’t just cover the smell, it will kill the air-born microbes causing the smell. Yep, that means you can use it as a disinfectant spray, air freshener, and many more things.
Because essential oils have anti-microbial properties as well as calming, energizing, grounding, and many other properties, a homemade, natural air freshener made with essential oils can have many benefits besides just freshening the air.
When I first started using essential oils, sprays were one of the first things I made. They are so simple and versatile. They can even be used in a pinch if you don’t have a diffuser on hand. I keep one in my purse and have used them often while traveling to freshen up our hotel room and our camper.
Natural air fresheners using essential oils can be custom blended to benefit a multitude of needs. And they smell wonderful-none of the harsh, chemical smells that burn your nose and respiratory system. I’ve made sprays that are calming, sprays that are uplifting and energizing, sprays that smell clean and fresh, and sprays that bring to mind the holidays. The blends are endless and so are the uses for each.
I have used the calming spray many times to help settle myself and my kiddos down and promote a peaceful night’s sleep. You can use them as a linen spray to freshen up the sheets or to enhance the mood and promote intimacy. I’ve also used the uplifting spray during school to help wake us up and help us focus.
Basically any benefit of diffusing oils can be gained through a spray but on a smaller scale. Yes, sometimes I use them as a natural air freshener to just make the room smell better. But usually, I have another purpose too. And the best part of making your own natural air freshener is that you can totally customize it.
(One important side note-make sure to always use glass spray bottles when making your own sprays. Essential oils can degrade and break down plastic bottles, allowing chemicals from the plastic to leach into your spray. Yuck! We’re trying to get rid of toxin, not add more. These are the glass bottles I use.)
Here is a video I’ve made showing just how easy it is to make a natural air freshener.
