I remember way back when I first started wearing makeup, someone told me that if I didn’t wash my makeup off, it would age my skin five years. Well, I’m not sure that I totally believed that, but I did get into the habit of washing my makeup off every night. I think I just like a clean face in the evening. But over the years, I have learned that although I like a clean face, I don’t always like the chemicals in commercially produced face wash. Nor do I like what it does to my skin. That’s why I came up with this DIY homemade face wash.
I wanted a face wash that would clean my skin without leaving it dried out. I have oily skin, so finding something that left my skin feeling clean was important. But I didn’t want something that stripped my skin of all the oil, causing it to be even more oily. Something that many chemicals products do. But this homemade honey collagen face wash is the perfect balance. It cleanses my skin, getting my makeup and the day’s grime off, yet my skin is so soft afterward. And now that the weather is turning cooler and my skin is dryer, it’s still perfect!
Let me share why my DIY homemade face wash works so well. The ingredients! First off is honey. Yeah, that one may have been a surprise, but it adds so much to this face wash. Local, raw honey is the best. Loaded with enzymes that are so beneficial for the skin. Honey is also a humectant, which means it draws moisture in from the air and traps it. This adds moisture to your skin. And honey has natural anti-bacterial qualities so it’s great for blemishes and breakouts.
Next up is castile soap. This is an all natural soap derived from plants-usually coconuts-and is effective at cleansing yet super gentle. It’s also a great ingredient to have on hand because it can be used for a ton of cleaning purposes and is in many DIY homemade cleansers. (Like my foaming hand soap and my kitchen and bath spray.)
The next ingredient that adds to the amazingness of this DIY homemade face wash is collagen. Probably another surprise, but collagen is essential for proper cellular function and smooth, supple skin. As we age, the connective tissue in our skin gets thin and begins to break down. Collagen helps to repair and stop that damage. Unfortunately, our modern diet doesn’t supply the needed collagen traditional diets did, therefore, supplementing with collagen powder is a great way to boost your health. This recipe just takes it a step further and lets you apply it right to your skin.
Another great ingredient is almond or jojoba oil. Now you may be asking why I would be putting oil on my skin when I’m trying to clean it-especially when my skin is naturally oily. But I haven’t gone crazy. Nourishing oils are a great way to remove the dirt and makeup from your skin. You don’t need to spend tons of money on toxic eye makeup remover. Just put a few drops of oil onto a cotton ball and gently rub it onto your eye area. Not only does it work, it nourishes your skin in the process! That is the premise behind adding a nourishing oil like almond or jojoba to our DIY homemade face wash. And almond oil and jojoba oils are great at moisturizing and absorbing quickly without leaving a thick oily film behind.
The last essential ingredient is essential oils. But this part is where you can have a little more fun and customize this face wash to your needs. Depending on how you want your DIY homemade face wash to best benefit you, the essential oils you choose will vary. I’m listing three different ways to customize your wash. First is for nourishing your skin-great for aging skin, wrinkles, or sensitive skin. The second is for healing blemish prone skin. The last is a skin brightening wash.
